Our July Pop-Up Sale at the new Furnish with Love warehouse in Decatur gave us a glimpse of how furniture resale can raise funds to support our mission. Thanks to incredibly generous donations from showrooms, interior designers, and friends, FWL often receives beautiful items that have value but may not be practical for family life in a small apartment. For example, a gorgeous lamp with a solid glass base or a delicate antique mirror have little hope of surviving intact in a home with four young kids!
What does Furnish with Love do with gifts of furnishings that we can't use in a project? These valuable donations are earmarked for resale. Our current plan is to host two furniture sales each year with a goal of raising $10,000 annually through furniture resale. Our volunteers have creative ideas of how we might entice shoppers with demonstrations on tablescapes for the holidays, floral design for your home, or other home improvement tips. With our great new location in downtown Decatur, we plan to build on what we learned during our first Pop-Up Sale and make this a semi-annual Furnish with Love fundraising event. Some of our favorite moments from the recent sale came from neighbors near E. Howard Street. An early-morning shopper who lives next door to the new FWL space breezed in, looked around, and made a quick purchase of a chest of drawers we had all been coveting. Lucky for her, the porters we had on hand could secure it on a rolling cart and deliver the chest straight to her condo. A furniture purchase that arrived in less than 15 minutes -- these days, that's a minor miracle! Another shopper who works at a nearby Decatur store fell in love with an ornate gold mirror she spied propped on the floor. She left the Pop-Up sale dreaming of purchasing it and circled back less than an hour later to seal the deal! She was beaming at the thought of that mirror in her own space. Design enthusiasts enjoy the hunt for a new or well-loved piece that completes a space or takes a room in a whole new direction. The Furnish with Love Pop-Up Sale aims to capture that enthusiasm. Our biggest sellers were lamps, mirrors, small accent pieces, and the beautiful Jim Thompson fabrics we had in abundance. We couldn't help but ask customers what they intended to do with their fabric purchases -- recover a bench, make pillow covers, create a new skirt for a bathroom sink, and use as a tablecloth were some of the ideas. Look for more of these popular items at our next Pop-Up Sale in the spring. Many, many thanks to our wonderful donors and to our shoppers!! We are especially grateful to Doug Self of JDouglas and Glenda McCormick for their incredible gifts of furnishings.
